How Much Does a Fence Cost in Modesto in 2026?

Fence installation cost in Modesto for 2026: price per foot by material, 6-foot privacy fence cost, gates, hardpan digging and what changes the price.

How Much Does a Fence Cost in Modesto in 2026?

Most installed fences cost $20 to $60 per linear foot in 2026, or $3,000 to $9,000 for a 150-foot yard. Those are national figures. What you pay in Modesto depends on local labor, the material, how many gates you want and how hard the ground is to dig.

Price ranges are national figures published by HomeGuide for 2026, not our own quotes. Central Valley labor, material prices and the conditions on your lot move the real number up or down. Last checked October 2026.

How much does a fence cost per foot?

MaterialInstalled cost per foot
Chain link$9 to $30
Wood$20 to $50
Vinyl$30 to $60
Aluminum$25 to $75
Wrought iron$50 to $85

How much does a 6-foot wood privacy fence cost?

The national range for a 6-foot privacy fence is $25 to $60 per foot installed. The table below shows totals by length for a typical fence at $20 to $60 per foot. A 6-foot solid fence uses more boards than a short or open one, so expect the upper part of each row. Redwood and cedar cost more than pressure-treated wood, and the grade of the boards matters as much as the species.

Fence lengthTypical installed cost
50 feet$1,000 to $3,000
100 feet$2,000 to $6,000
150 feet$3,000 to $9,000
200 feet$4,000 to $12,000

What is the cheapest fence to have installed?

Chain link is the cheapest, from about $9 per foot in the national figures. For privacy, a plain dog-ear board fence on pressure-treated posts is usually the least expensive solid fence. If you need to keep a large dog in the yard on a budget, 5-foot or 6-foot chain link does it, and privacy slats can go in later. On a ranchette or orchard lot, wire field fence costs less per foot than any yard fence, but it is a different product for a different job.

Is black aluminum cheaper than wrought iron or vinyl?

It is cheaper than wrought iron and close to vinyl. The national figures put aluminum at $25 to $75 per foot, wrought iron at $50 to $85 and vinyl at $30 to $60. Aluminum does not rust when sprinklers hit it every day, and it does not need repainting after a few valley summers the way iron does.

How much extra does a gate cost?

Each gate is priced on its own, not by the foot. The width, the material and the hardware decide it. A single walk gate is the smallest add. A double gate for a driveway or side yard, a wide farm gate, or any gate with an opener is the largest. We list every gate as a separate line.

How much extra for a slope, brush or an old fence?

We price those after a site visit, because they differ from yard to yard. Most Modesto lots are flat, so slope is rarely the issue. The usual extras here are removing and hauling the old fence, breaking out old concrete footings, clearing vines, oleander or tree limbs along the line, and digging through hardpan, which can turn a ten-minute post hole into a much longer one.

I got three quotes and they are far apart. Which one is realistic?

Lay them next to each other and compare the scope before the price. Check that each one covers the same footage and height, the same wood species and grade or the same vinyl or metal product, the post size and depth, the number of gates, tear-out of the old fence and cleanup. The low bid has often left one of those out. Also confirm each bidder has a California contractor licence. A bid from someone without one is not comparable.

Does a fence add value to my home?

A straight, solid fence makes a house easier to sell, mainly to buyers with dogs, children or a pool. It rarely pays back its full cost in the sale price. For questions about property taxes, ask the Stanislaus County Assessor's Office, which decides what counts as new construction for assessment.
